New proposal for 100 % tax

The insight of the Spanish government proposal; 100% tax for non-EU citizens buying property in Spain.

As most people have heard the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez announced 12 housing reform proposals for 2025.  The 100% tax on homes purchased by non-EU nationals was just one of them.

The legislative involved in bringing any new proposals into law is a lenghty process, likely to take numerous years, even if it was to be a smooth process. Also, the ruling party in the Valencia and Murcia regions at the moment is the PP. The party of Pedro Sanchez is the PSOE. Valencia and Murcia regions rely heavily on the tourism economy, so the challenge Mr. Sanchez faces to try get his 100% non-EU purchase tax proposal to even start the process is very unlikely.

Any non-EU national seriously considering buying a Spanish property in the short to medium term doesnt need to alter their plans.

There is nothing in the reform proposals that suggests any impact on non-EU nationals who already own a property in Spain.

We also have that the final say on this proposal would involve the EU for any final decision. Spain does not have unilateral authority to make all of the decisions regarding who pays what taxes ,so we are sure that it  will certainly be taken to the EU Parliament and Courts.

We are confident that at the moment and for the foreseeable future, there will be no dramatic changes in the law and buyers can proceed to purchase their dream home in Spain with confidence.
